I actually had a friend that owned both cars. And I can say without a doubt that the BMW is something else. While the A8 is probably better looking (I like how the E66 looks more anyways). The A8 has a better interior, MMI system, and entertainment system. But the BMW makes the car feel smaller than it really is, the handing is supreme. The power deliever on the W12 is slightly better than the V12. But the BMW has more than enough power.

I actually got my dad to buy a 4.2 A8 of that generation (he was looking at used escalades previously).
Seriously great cars, love that interior. Makes you feel like a million bucks driving it.
Side note: a used v12 (or w12) german car would scare the shit out of me because of maintenance.
